Prince Phillip undergoes surgery

THE Duke of Edinburgh, Prince Philip, has had successful heart surgery after suffering a blocked artery, Buckingham Palace said.

The Duke underwent an "invasive procedure of coronary stenting" after being taken to hospital with chest pains, the palace confirmed.

A stent is a small tube inserted into a blood vessel to keep it open and avoid blockages, and is often fitted through a small incision during keyhole surgery.

The Royal family had been gathering for Christmas at a retreat at Sandringham in eastern England, when the 90-year-old Duke started experiencing chest pains.

He has been taken to Papworth Hospital, the UK's largest specialist cardiothoracic hospital.
