Race day will honour late local legend
WHAT is normally a day for plenty of fun, laughter and good-quality racing, the annual Christmas Race Day will be a day for remembrance as well, as late race caller and local legend Barry Jones becomes immortalised in the club he once loved.
Barry will have his legacy remembered through the deck at Bunya Race Park, which will be renamed the Barry Jones Members Bar and Deck.
Dalby and Northern Downs Jockey Club secretary Graham Buntain told the Herald it was important to remember Barry for the work he did and loved.
“He was a long-time race caller and member of the Dalby and Northern Downs Jockey Club and a very strong supporter of the club,” Mr Buntain said.
The five-race program will also include a race named after the race caller.
The Barry Jones Members Bar and Deck Benchmark 50 Handicap 1200m will be run as the fourth race of the day.
Mr Buntain said aside from the sombre events of the day, he was looking forward to “lots of fun” and “lots of good racing”.
“It’s always got a good crowd and is always well-supported,” he said.
“It’s an important event in town and people should come out and support their race club. “Come out, relax, enjoy yourself and have a good time.”
Tickets to this Saturday’s race day start at $7 for concession and $10 general admission.
Gates open at 11am and the first race will be run at 1.30pm.
