Group wanting Melbourne flights approached by Air Asia

THE announcement that QantasLink would fly between Hervey Bay and Sydney on weekends has provided a boost for the direct flights to Melbourne campaign.

Hervey Bay businessman Rob Braddock and Len Norton started a Facebook page to gauge community support.

The pair want direct flights to Melbourne because they believe it will open up the region to more tourism opportunities- and because many locals have relatives in Victoria.

Their Facebook page, We Want Melbourne Flights from Hervey Bay, has about 3700 'likes'.

It was set up late last year and Mr Braddock has been approached by Air Asia.

"They're interested and that's about it at this stage," he said.

The pair have gauged community support from other businesses and politicians on the Fraser Coast- all positive.

Mr Braddock is using the momentum as motivation to keep pushing.

"We're going to keep up the fight," he said.

"I get sick of everyone saying, we'll get onto it- but nobody's doing anything about it."

The recent announcement of Qantas flying to Hervey Bay from Sydney provided a boost to the campaign.

"Its a very good starting point," Mr Braddock said.

"If we can bring another party into the whole thing- it will make it affordable."

Fraser Coast Mayor Gerard O'Connell supported the proposal but agreed it would be an uphill battle.

"Airlines are pretty strategic in their view," he said.
