The Revenant wins big at The Golden Globes
THE Revenant is shaping up to be the film to beat this awards season after winning three Golden Globes today.
The film was named Best Motion Picture Drama and its director Alejandro G Inarritu and star Leonardo DiCaprio also took home awards.
DiCaprio, who is tipped to possibly win his first Oscar this year for the grueling film, dedicated his gong to the world's indigenous peoples.
"I want to share this award with all the first nations people represented in this film and all the indigenous communities around the world," he said.
"It is time that we recognise your history and we protect your indigenous lands from corporate interests and people who are out her to exploit them. It is time we heard your voice and protected your land for future generations."
The Martian won two awards in its controversial Motion Picture Comedy or Musical categories, while Steve Jobs also took out two categories.
Tom Hanks presented Denzel Washington with the Cecil B Demille Award for his impressive body of work.
Washington received a standing ovation, as did fellow screen veteran Sylvester Stallone for his return in Creed.
Stallone won the Globe 40 years after first starring as Rocky Balboa, a role for which he was nominated for Best Actor in 1977.
Australian nominees Cate Blanchett, Ben Mendelsohn and Mad Max: Fury Road director George Miller all missed out on awards.
The Globes are considered an early indicator for the Oscars nominations, which will be announced this Thursday night.
In the television categories, Mr Robot and Mozart in the Jungle won multiple awards, while the BBC's Wolf Hall was named Best Mini-series.
