Riders fly high for Qld title

BMX: Gympie will send one of its largest athlete contingents to the Queensland BMX championships this weekend.

Being held at Queensland's premier racing facility in Brisbane, riders from all over the state will compete for a coveted "State Plate”.

Seasoned campaigners Dorian and Leith Rodighiero will be joined by Ashton and Ben Korn, Cameron Hetherington, Katie and Brady Gibson, Aiden and Ryan Finch, as well as Anthony Nyburg, Clayton Wilding and Iszaac, Ivy and Abe Richards.

Gympie BMX club president Mike Roderick said his riders were excited about the competition.

"The athletes have been training for months,” he said.

"There has been a lot of hype and build-up.

"It is just impressive that we have so many representing our club.

"The quality of their riding has improved over the last six months in the lead-up to the event.

"For most of these guys it is their first Queensland titles.”

BMX featured prominently at the Rio Olympics and, with the sports profile growing every year, Roderick said rider numbers were boosted by the accessibility and excitement of the sport.

However for now, he is focused on the week ahead.

"It is all about the group of riders representing our club,” he said.

"We have a number of riders who are in the running to get plates.”

Officially starting yesterday, the titles conclude Sunday.
