Stolen phone leads to court ordered probation

STEALING the mobile phone of a man she met after a night out on the town ultimately led to a Gympie woman appearing in Gympie Magistrates Court Monday.

Denver Marree Bates, 30, appeared, faced with five charges, including posession of a drug, theft and three separate occasions of failing to report while released on bail.

The court heard on November 29, while in Maryborough Bates and another woman met a man while out on the town before returning to his residence to continue drinking.

While the man was sleeping, Bates stole a black Samsung from the kitchen bench before leaving.

Police took up the theft, tracking Bates down at Maryborough's Tattersall Hotel.

A subsequent search of her handbag revealed both the phone and a clip-seal bag of green leafy material confirmed as cannabis.

Both offences led to a bail requirement to report to Maryborough Police which Bates then went on to break three times on December 2, 4 and 6.

Bates pleaded guilty to all five charges, had convictions recorded and was placed on 12 months probation after the matter was briefly stood down while the Gympie woman sought advice from the court's probation officer.
