Council has boundary challenge

WITH Gympie Regional Council now to be elected with divisions, the next challenge is to draw the boundaries.

One vote-one value requirements mean Electoral Commission staff will have to cut the region into areas with similar populations.

Sparsely populated areas like the Cooloola Coast or Kilkivan district will have to be lumped in with other communities that may not share their interests.

If the region is cut like a pie centred on the population centre, Gympie, each division would be dominated by Gympie voters.

If the city is kept separate, then outlying divisions will have odd shapes surrounding the city and Gympie's four councillors would dominate any meeting.
