Tin Can Bay bushfire scare

RESIDENTS suspect arson was behind a small bushfire along the Tin Can Bay foreshore last Sunday.

Tin Can Bay correspondent Ken Ferguson said plumes of smoke were seen in the afternoon.

"On inspection, directly opposite the Cooloola Waters Retirement Village, part of the scrub... was assumed deliberately set alight," he said.

Tin Can Bay's Fire Brigade quickly extinguished the fire but Mr Ferguson feared the incident could have been much worse in different weather conditions.

"There is no telling of the potential havoc that could occur if some of those flying embers had fallen into the shrubbery within the gardens of the village," he said.

"Luckily this threat passed as the local firies were soon at the scene.

"Would be arsonists should be well informed that not only do the nesting bird life and small animals that live in these areas suffer, but you also have the potential to cause a much greater catastrophe."
