Gympie region sits like a tinder box
THE Gympie region waits anxiously today, with fire authorities warning of significant danger along the Queensland coast.
As New South Wales continues to experience its worst fire disaster in 45 years, Gympie's regional fire fighters were placed on emergency stand-by in case it happened here.
From tomorrow night, fire bans will come into force over an area from Gympie to Bundaberg and west to Murgon and Wondai.
In the extremely dry and hot conditions, we have the makings of disaster, Queensland Fire and Rescue Service rural operations area director Warren Edwards said yesterday.
A serious blaze near Bauple last week has motivated fire authorities to keep an especially close watch on grassfires burning uncontrolled in the near-Gympie region.
One at Boreen Point has been under observation for some days and authorities yesterday confirmed a new blaze at the Camp Kerr army training area at Tin Can Bay.
"Every day without rain makes it that much drier."
