Tony’s top tipster again

FOR two years in a row, Tony Stephens has reigned supreme in The Gympie Times NRL tipping competition.

The owner of Tony Stephens Refrigeration recently took out his second consecutive title with a score of 119 points, defeating tipsters from six other local businesses.

Tony and his wife Judy won the 2013 competition with a score of 134, indicating the diffuclty of picking winners this season.

He said that he didn't rely totally on luck, and did "a bit of research" before entering his tips every week.

"I also have some good contacts that I rely on, but I'm not willing to reveal them," he said.

"I wasn't going very well at the start of the season but came good later on.

"I'm pretty loyal to the Broncos, and find it hard to tip against them."

Stephens takes home an impressive prize pool worth more than $6500, including a trip for two to the Melbourne Cup next month with flights and accommodation included, a $250 gift voucher to spend at a local business, and a full page ad in The Gympie Times.

While Stephens won fairly comfortably in the end, it was a close race behind him for second and third.

Margaret and John Cochrane from Gympie Regional Realty and Michelle and Andrew Dunkley of Gympie Blinds both finished the season on 114 points.

After a countback the Cochranes were awarded the second prize of a $100 gift voucher and half-page ad in The Gympie Times, while Michelle and Andrew receive a quarter-page ad and a $50 voucher.

Those who purchased Platinum Tipping Packages this year will also head off to the NRL grand final in Sydney on Sunday. Stephens will join the Cochranes, Kayley and Eric Sprott (Sprott's Stainless Steel), Karen Corbett (Ray White Gympie) and Beverley Connor (Harvey Norman Gympie).

"I'm hoping for a Rabbitohs win," Stephens said.

"I tipped the Cowboys a few weeks ago to go all the way, but even if they beat the Roosters I think they would've struggled with the way the Rabbitohs are playing at the moment."
