WATCH: Whales hunt down shark

FALSE killer whales aren't often seen in the waters off Australia's east coast.

They're an unusual creature in that they are known to mate with bottle-nose dolphins resulting in a mammal known as a Wholphin.

And while it's widely known that dolphins and indeed false killer whales hunt down and eat sharks the behaviour is rarely captured on film - thus when it was the marine biologists who caught it were thrilled.

The footage was taken off Cronulla in Syndey's southern suburbs.

Bruno Kataoka, who captured the dramatic footage, told 7NewsSydney, "We just happened to be there at the right moment, at the right time. I did not expect to see what we saw."
