Why you need to take a weekend away, now

WE'RE a few weeks back into the working year and already the cracks are starting to show.

You've got half of the office suffering post-holiday stress disorder and other portion a little too enthusiastic about their new KPIs. So, if it's doing your head in a bit, it could be time for a weekend away.

Enjoy a metropolitan escape in the state's capital of Brisbane where the food is top-notch, the events calendar is chock-a-block and you can enjoy some of the best performing arts and live sporting matches in the country.

Here is your ultimate getaway in Brisbane; the break you know you need:

Afternoon: Check into a funky hotel in the heart of the city or on the fringe. Turn off your work phone and disable email alerts.

Evening: Catch the City Cat to Eat Street to experience Brisbane's shipping container street food village where fairy floss only comes in size 'massive' and the assortment of delicious foods will satisfy every craving you have ever had.

Eat Street is a must-do when visiting Brisbane.

Morning: Hit up one of the hiking trails to burn off some of those tacos you overindulged in last night and let nature melt away your work stresses.

Midday: Head to lunch at Fish Lane in South Bank. This may just be Brisbane's trendiest laneway, but we'll let you be the judge.

Evening: Sniff out one of the city's top rooftop bars for a nightcap after a night at QPAC seeing Aladdin The Musical, or watching the NRL Double Header at Suncorp Stadium.  Try Brisbane's highest, Sazerac Bar, which is 30 floors in the air or Spicers Balfour for something a little more intimate.

Brisbane is full of funky bars you should check out. Try The Gresham for a moody vibe and some top-notch scotch and whiskey.

Morning: It wouldn't be a Sunday morning without eggs benny and a double cap, so head out to one of Brisbane's star breakfast cafes. Try Scout Café on Petrie Terrace, Pawpaw in East Brisbane, Little Larder in New Farm or Kin & Co at Teneriffe. (They serve actual chocolate shavings on your cappuccino at Kin & Co and yes it will change your life)

Midday: Get cultured at the Gallery of Modern Art where exhibitions are nothing like you'd expect from a humble art gallery - they're quirky, interactive and always interesting. Take Patricia Piccinini's exhibition for example which is a fusion of weird, wonderful and totally mind-boggling. Her daring works meld science, surrealism and mythology and comes to GOMA on March 24 until August 5.

Afternoon: Head back to your place, don't fire up your laptop until morning and enjoy what you have left of your weekend.

And that's how you distract yourself from the back to work blues. More cool things to do in Brisbane HERE
