Winners are grinners as council poll declared

OFFICIAL results are now emerging for the Gympie Regional Council election.

Returning officer Ken Garner on Thursday formally declared the poll for mayor and three councillors.

Mick Curran has officially been returned as mayor, after Mr Garner declared the election result.

Glen Hartwig and Mal Gear are the representatives for Divisions 2 and 3.

And Bob Leitch has been officially returned as councillor for Division 7.

Cr Curran thanked voters and said Queensland Electoral Commission staff had worked hard to be among the first in the Wide Bay area to be able to declare some of the polling results.

"I'd like to thank the returning officer and all his hard working staff.

"They have put in some hard work over the past month or so," Cr Curran said.

"There are still a number of candidates waiting on a result and that will certainly come next week."

Councillor-elect Mal Gear also attended the poll declaration and said he hoped his term of office would go according to plan, also thanking voters.

Mr Garner said his staff had worked some long days and into the night, often at work until 8pm.

Counting three elections in one - the mayor and councillor elections and the referendum vote - had been a big effort for all those involved, he said.
