HR manager spun web of deceit to conceal her fraud

A FORMER Dingo Australia employee has faced Dalby Magistrates Court, charged with fraud and tampering with records.

The defendant, Beth Amanda Morris, was silent as police prosecutor Derek Brady read the charges.

General Manager at Dingo Australia Dalby Peter Smethurst watched from the back of the court room.

Mrs Morris pleaded guilty to inappropriately using the company credit card 27 times, and altering the company records in Quickbooks (accounting software) to make the expenses appear legitimate.

The court heard the offences occurred between July 12, 2015 and June 7, 2016, mostly involving the purchase of fuel, but also including the purchase of drinks, clothing, groceries and dog food.

In total, the amount defrauded came to $1797.

Defence lawyer Michael Bond told the court that his client, 42, was very remorseful, had suffered great embarrassment and was moving to another town to begin a new job.

He went on to say Morris had been suffering from depression, and felt animosity toward her employer whilst in the role of Human Resources Manager.

He tendered three references, one of which mentioned Morris was owed 164 hours of holiday.

Magistrate Kay Ryan said it was no excuse.

"The dishonesty that took place when you falsified the records of the company, when you tried to cover your tracks... that just says to me that you really thought about this, it wasn't just a one-off," Magistrate Ryan said.

Morris was sentenced to three months imprisonment, which were wholly suspended for 12 months.

She was also ordered to pay $1797 restitution to Dingo Australia.

"If you break the law by committing dishonesty offences (again), I guarantee you will go to prison," Magistrate Ryan said.
