X Factor Australia finalist dreams of New York

MAHALIA Simpson is eyeing off a music jaunt in New York after The X Factor.

The New Zealand-born singer is one of just five finalists remaining on the reality singing show, which is entering its final weeks.

"My dream is to go to New York for a bit and suss out the underground scene over there and jam with a couple of musicians," she told APN.

The shy 22-year-old is living in Sydney in limbo after flying to Brisbane from Christchurch to audition for the show.

"When I came to Sydney for the live shows I brought everything," she said.

"I think I'll either move to Sydney or Melbourne (after the show)."

Simpson has been up for elimination more than any of the remaining finalists. She admits it's hard to bounce back from facing the chop, as she's done three times now.

Tuesday's show was her most dramatic bottom two sing-off yet, with the judging panel deadlocked and the public vote sending home Natalie Conway.

"I'm always having doubts about myself; even though I've come this far it's hard to get rid of them," she said.

"You have such high expectations of yourself, so when I found myself in the bottom two for the third time I did feel a bit defeated. It's hard dealing with that."

She's likely to bounce back next week, though, with her mentor Dannii Minogue free from any theme to choose her next song for Monday's live performance show.

"I'm so stoked," Simpson said.

"She's picked something that's definitely more suited to my voice. It's going to show off my strengths for sure. It's an old song, an old popular song."

Simpson believes her biggest competition is 19-year-old graphic design student Cyrus Villanueva.

"Cyrus has a pretty good shot," she said.

"He just has the stage presence, the whole look and the little wink going on. And he loves singing; he loves the whole thing."

The X Factor continues tonight at 7.30pm on Channel 7.
