The year for milestones

THE Capricorn Region is a major centre of events in Queensland and 2012 is a year of major anniversaries, milestones and celebrations.

The Rockhampton Art Gallery this year celebrates its 45th birthday, with a major program of exhibitions scheduled throughout the year. The first, aptly entitled 45, is a celebration of the significant and diverse permanent collections of the Gallery. Entry is free to the Gallery and 45 is on display until March 18.

A massive 100 year milestone for the Rockhampton Jockey Club. In March 1912 at a club committee meeting, a recommendation was made that the course should be named "Callaghan Park" after the oldest member and Patron, Dr William Callaghan, one of its consistent supporters ever since it was formed in 1868.  Now in 2012, Callaghan Park is the social place to be for events like the St Patricks Day Races (March 17) and the Rockhampton Winter Racing Carnival (June 9 - 23).

The Golden Mount Festival this year turns 35.  Held over three day's during the May Day Long Weekend (May 5-7), it is a celebration of the Mount Morgan Community and its rich history.  2012 will officially start on the Saturday with street markets, procession, Dig 4 Gold Competition and the famous 'Running of the Cutter'.  Sunday sees the Golden Mount Festival Rodeo, held at Newman Oval, followed by a Lance Friend concert.  Monday is a family day at the Dam with games, poetry, races and competitions.

The Yeppoon Annual Shell Club Show is celebrating its 40th year.  Run by the Keppel Bay Shell Club, which is based at Shell World Yeppoon, next to the Capricorn Coast Visitor Information Centre, the show has a proud heritage and an extensive collection of shells from the Capricorn Coast, the nation and the world.  The Shell Show will take place at the Yeppoon Showgrounds from July 7-8.

Gemfest - Festival of Gems, held each year in the Sapphire Gemfields in the Central Highlands, this year celebrates 25 years.  The festival is a celebration of Australian gemstones and generates considerable tourism for the region under the beautiful winter sun.  With exhibitions, entertainment, workshops, demonstrations and much more, Gemfest will be held from August 9-12, 2012.

The Village Festival has reached double digits in 2012 - 10 years since it kicked off and still going strong. This music and arts festival is a springboard for local musicians to play alongside national bands, with the careers of the likes of Busby Marou starting here.  Other highlights over the past ten years have included Dub Marine, Jeff Lang, Ash Grunwald, Waiting for Guiness, The Bull Sisters, Circus Oz, The Fumes and Tijuana Cartel.  The Village Festival will take place from August 17-19.

Yeppoon Lion's Tropical Pinefesthas been run by the Lions Club for a massive 45 years.  It seems 1967 was a busy year in the region!  The overall event is in its 51st year in 2012.  The event takes over Yeppoon town centre on October 13-14, 2012 and includes a community day, a ball and the famous street parade.

The Rockhampton Bowls Club is 100 years old on September 14.  The club will celebrate this milestone with events leading up to this occasion and finish with a dinner at the Frenchville Sports Club.

The Scottvale Park Squash Centre has it's 35th anniversary in November this year.  It was opened by Rockhampton Mayor Rex Pilbeam on the 21st November 1977.  As well as social games and rolling competitions, the Centre will see three major tournaments played in this celebration year - the Junior Open in March, Master's Tournament in May and the Rockhampton Business Houses Teams Titles in July.
